Abstract

Purpose of the study: to investigate the relationship between the index of alexithymia and severity of pain in patients with ulcerative colitis and comparable severity of the next attack. Materials and methods: the study included 59 patients with acute exacerbation of ulcerative colitis who were hospitalized in the gastroenterological department of the Saratov Regional Hospital. The severity of the next attack of ulcerative colitis was evaluated according to the criteria of Truelove-Witts (1955). Results: with comparable severity of the next attack of ulcerative colitis patients with high alexithymia significantly more often reported higher levels of pain than at low values one. Conclusion: in the choice of optimal tactics analgesic drug therapy in patients with ulcerative colitis in the period of exacerbation it is necessary to consider psychological characteristics of their personality.
