<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The article highlights the pharmacological activity of berberine, as well as its place in the treatment of the current epidemic - metabolic syndrome. The review examines the molecular mechanisms that allows achieving anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant effects in detail. Berberine’s pharmacological profile makes it possible to have a positive effect on the pathway of obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, dyslipoproteinemia, the intestinal microbiome and insulin resistance. In addition, the article reviews the main pharmacokinetic parameters and side effects of chemically unmodified berberine.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>берберин</kwd><kwd>ожирение</kwd><kwd>инсулинорезистентность</kwd><kwd>микробиота</kwd><kwd>метаболический синдром</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>berberine</kwd><kwd>obesity</kwd><kwd>insulin resistance</kwd><kwd>microbiota</kwd><kwd>metabolic syndrome</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Xu Z., Feng W., Shen Q. et al.
